Ballymun shooting victim recently released from prison after 'knuckleduster assault'

Mistaken identity a possibility in last night’s attack.

THE VICTIM OF last night’s shooting is a convicted violent criminal who was recently released from prison.

The man, who is in his late 20s, was shot a number of times in Ballymun as he reversed a car out of a driveway in Balcurris Park West at around 11pm. Gardaí believe a lone shooter approached and fired at least five rounds into his body.

The man, who has at least 45 convictions, is expected to survive the attack. However, he is to undergo surgery this afternoon to remove a bullet which remained in his body after the attack.

Detectives probing the shooting fear that the incident could escalate what were already tense relations between two feuding groups. While the victim of the attack was a well-known criminal, officers are investigating whether the shooter hit the wrong person.

The attack is not believed to be connected to the Kinahan/Hutch feud.

The father of one, who had received help for drug addiction, was sentenced to one year in prison back in 2015 for his role in what was described as ” vicious beating” of a man in the north Dublin area.

Speaking during his appeal,  Justice Garrett Sheehan said that on the occasion in question a young man was attacked by three men including the shooting victim who was believed to be carrying a knuckle duster and hurley which was thrown at the injured man.

He has been clean from drugs since his release from prison and had tried to remove himself from dangerous associates. However, it is feared that there will be reprisal attacks for this shooting.

The victim is currently finishing his two year suspended sentence and must be of good behaviour for two years post-release. If he is not, he can be imprisoned for two years.
